South Congress Café, an Austin South Congress restaurant, is known for its award winning Bloody Mary, carrot-cake French toast & daily brunch & dinner in a retro-modern atmosphere. The café emerged in 2003, influenced by a new generation of local artists and fare. The building was originally a drug store built in the 1940’s. To preserve the charm and history of old Austin, it showcases the original brick structure with modern architectural details. The inspired Southwestern fare at this relaxed, upscale eatery features inventive, distinctive dishes. Beautiful outdoor patio, full craft bar and beer on tap.

  1. South Congress Cafe came highly recommended to me, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and round up to four stars.

I stopped by for lunch on a weekday, and the host let me know that I could get 20% off my total bill if I sat at the bar. Sold! I ordered the crab cake Benedict with regular Hollandaise sauce; no extras. The entree is billed as crab cakes with bacon-spinach quiche. The server let me know that the quiche is in lieu of a poached egg--an interesting idea that fell flat. The crab cake was good, but then it's topped with a mound of lackluster steamed egg on top. There's too much quiche for the amount of crab cake, and the quiche itself wasn't that good. There's no crust to it and the bacon is sprinkled on the Hollandaise sauce rather than a quiche Lorraine that has bacon baked into it. I left more than half of the quiche pile on my plate.

The highlight of the dish: the potato pancake. Yum yum.

  2. We showed up with a group of 6 on Sunday night and had an excellent time. Everything from the appetizers to the entrées were great.

I have to give a shout out to our waitress Mae, who was amazing. She was super attentive and got everything right even with us making multiple changes to items off the menu. Best of all, she split the check for us (2 couples and 2 singles) even going so far as splitting the brie 6 ways.

    We will definitely be back.

  3. This is the first restaurant I went to when I visited Austin. Came on a Friday around 1:30pm and there was no wait!

The best part of the meal was the free bread with that butter! It's one of the best free fresh bread I've ever had! A MUST. Just eat the carbs, it's worth ever calorie.

Bf got the beef hash with avocado, bacon and tortillas and duck gumbo while I had the crab cake Benedict with chipotle hollandaise and potato pancake. 5/5 on the flavor and texture for the hash and the Benedict! It was actually the best crab cake Benedict and potato pancake I've ever had! Don't order the duck gumbo, I would give it a 1/5 for bland.

Adding avocado, bacon and tortillas is around $7-8 extra.

Pretty decent food and top notch service. Super friendly staff and they really pay attention to your table and check up on you. My water cup was only empty for like 10 seconds before someone noticed.

I would come back here again to try the shrimp and grits!
